StasegemIn the Political Prisoner Street in Stasegem, at least a large part of the headquarters of clothing chain Brooklyn burned down on Wednesday evening. The plume of smoke could be seen for tens of kilometers around. As far as is known, there were no casualties.

The fire was noticed shortly before 9:30 p.m. In no time the flames shot through the roof. Fire extinguishers from three fire stations responded, but reinforcements were immediately called in, among other things to get extra extinguishing water on site. The arrival of the fire brigade did not go smoothly, because the Political Prisoner Street is currently broken up and difficult to drive on. Because of the works, it was also not possible to quickly set up a ladder truck at any desired location.

Difficult extinguishing works
Several hundred curious people, residents of the densely populated neighborhood but also people who approached the fire by bicycle and car, followed the extinguishing works. The police had to repeatedly ask to keep a sufficient distance from the fire. The extinguishers meanwhile tried to prevent the fire from spreading to other company buildings. After all, Brooklyn’s head office is located on one side of the industrial estate in Stasegem. The fire was not under control at the time of going to press.

Unclear cause
The head office of the clothing chain is housed in the affected building, as is customer service. Brooklyn has branches in Kortrijk, Roeselare, Ghent, Bruges, Knokke, Waregem and Ostend, among others. Reportedly, no one was in the building when the fire broke out. The cause is not yet clear.
