Heavy fire at Liège airport: plumes of smoke can be seen until …

In a fire at Bierset Airport, Liège, a building burnt down late Wednesday evening. The fire brigade came to the scene en masse, and the fire got under control around midnight. There were no injuries and no aircraft was damaged.

The fire started at around 10:30 PM on a building between the passenger terminal and the airport’s fuel department. The fire was accompanied by a heavy smoke development, but according to acting mayor of Grâce-Hollogne, Manuel Dony, it did not pose a danger to local residents. A nearby hotel was not to be evacuated.

The fire brigade fought the fire with about 40 men. It was under control around midnight, says Christian Delcourt, the airport’s communications manager.

The fire had to divert three flights. Several FedEx and TNT cargo planes are expected at night. All flights have resumed around 2 a.m. and planes can land and take off again.

Damage

The material damage is considerable. “Much of the hangar has been destroyed,” said Delcourt. The building included equipment and offices. Delcourt hopes to draw up a final balance later today.

There were no injuries and no damage to aircraft. The cause of the fire is unknown.
