World No.3 Alexander Zverev was severely punished after his disqualification from the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco on Wednesday in Mexico. The German got angry and hit the referee’s chair several times with his racket after his doubles loss 6-2, 4-6, 10/6 with the Brazilian Marcelo Melo against the duo composed of the Briton Lloyd Glasspool and Finland’s Harri Heliovaara.
On Thursday, the ATP decided to impose a fine of 40,000 dollars on Zverev and to withdraw the bonus of 30,000 dollars due to his victory in the first round of the singles. He was also stripped of all his points from the tournament in the ATP rankings.
His disqualification deprived him of the second round singles match against his compatriot Peter Gojowczyk who thus reached the quarter-finals.
