In the Turkish port city Izmir a number of buildings have collapsed and large dust clouds hang over a number of areas of the city. Nothing is known about victims yet. Izmir is Turkey’s third city and is an important logistics and industrial center. About 2.5 million people live there. Buildings would also have collapsed in other Turkish cities.
Also from the Greek island Samos damage is reported. According to the Greek television channel ERT, houses have also collapsed there and part of the buildings in the port have been flooded by tidal waves. The 45,000 inhabitants of Samos are asked to stay away from the beaches because of high waves crashing into the coast. An additional problem are the large refugee camps on the nearby Greek islands of Chios and Lesbos. Nothing is known about the situation there either.
More later.
