Heatwave and fire in Canada: Lytton destroyed, the village before and after

Only smoldering ruins remain. The village of Lytton has been virtually wiped off the map after a major fire broke out on Wednesday and Thursday. “90% of the village is burnt down, including the town center”, says Brad Vis, MP for the riding, on Facebook. Epicenter of the record heat wave that hit western Canada, with temperatures of almost 50 ° C, the village was devoured by flames in barely 15 minutes. Fortunately, the 250 inhabitants of the village had been evacuated in the early evening, before the tragedy.

Today Lytton looks like a ghost town. Its colorful trees burned, buildings were destroyed, and its residents, after being evacuated, were invited to either Boston Bar, a nearby township, or Merritt, where an emergency shelter was opened.

This Saturday morning, 150 fires were still in progress in the northwestern United States and Canada, with a toll for the moment estimated at 700 dead.
