Heather Hewitt, a woman in her 40s, died after an incident involving a horse at Glenamaddy Equestrian Centre in Co Galway on 6 April. The incident occurred as a horse was being mounted. Hewitt, previously of Crowborough, East Sussex, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death has not been confirmed. Hewitt’s body was taken to University Hospital Galway for a post-mortem examination. Initially, it was believed that a member of the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland had visited the scene. However, it has since emerged that it was a Health and Safety Authority officer from the Republic of Ireland who did so. The HSA is now investigating the incident.
Hewitt was the treasurer of the Glenway Riding Club. Tributes to her have been paid by a range of Irish riding clubs including the western region of the Association of Irish Riding Clubs, Burren Riding Club, Tynagh Riding Club and Benbulben Riding Club.
Hewitt is survived by her husband Kieran, daughter Beth, parents Clive and Tracy, sister Andrea, and stepchildren Conor, Jack and Millie. Her funeral will be held in the UK. The family said that they were grateful for the help given following the incident and for the “kindness and support” they had received.
