NEW YORK – A bout of severe storms threatens the New York area as sweltering temperatures Thursday trigger an air quality alert.
The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for several counties in New York and New Jersey on Thursday as the mercury rises, though Friday will be even more unbearable, with actual temperatures reaching above 90 amid extreme humidity. .
The NWS today issued an air quality watch for LI and Monmouth and Ocean counties. While Thursday afternoon will be very hot, Friday can be classified as “hot and humid,” according to The Authority on Weather (LAEET). Check the weather alerts here.
A storm is possible later in the day on Friday, but Saturday is expected to see more widespread storms and potentially severe weather that could bring damaging winds, hail and torrential rain to a swath of the tri-state area.
Flash floods are possible in areas heavily affected by rapid and heavy rains. All of New York City, the Hudson Valley and Nassau County, along with most of central and northern New Jersey and Connecticut are in the probable severe weather hazard zone on Saturday.
The greatest threat is likely to impact the tri-state area from late morning through Saturday afternoon, LAEET said. A lot could change depending on how the system develops.
Some showers could linger into early Sunday morning, but conditions should improve greatly as the day progresses. Expect highs in the low 80s by mid-Sunday and partly cloudy skies once the remnants of rain recede. Want even better news?
