Warm long summers and shorter and milder winters will become more common in the years to come, says Swedish climate researcher.
“The problem is the long-term warming and the various effects it brings,” says professor of climatology Erik Kjellström at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI.
He emphasizes that the heat waves that have characterized Scandinavia and Sweden are not abnormal for the summer months, but that these will become more common in the years ahead.

Several hot days
Over the past 30 years, the number of days in the year with temperatures above 25 degrees has increased by around a week in Gotland and in the Stockholm area, compared with the period from 1961-1990.
Climate change can be seen especially in the winter statistics. In Sweden, the average number of days of snowfall has been reduced by about three weeks.
Shorter periods of cooling snow cover lead to further rising temperatures.
– You can think back and see that things have changed. And the temperature increase is in line with the climate scenarios, so we will get more of this weather going forward, says Kjellström.
Cool periods are milder
As of next week, low pressure is reported, and cool air from the Atlantic is expected to provide cooler summer weather.
– It is normal for the weather to vary during the summer, but climate change is constantly in the background. What we see is that even during the cooler periods, it has become warmer, says Kjellström.
