Officials say a dozen deaths in Washington and Oregon may be related to the intense hot weather that began last weekend.
The hazardous weather that saw Seattle and Portland record record high temperatures exceeding 37.7 degrees Celsius for several consecutive days is expected to ease in those cities. But in the interior of Spokane the temperature spiked.
The National Weather Service said temperatures hit 42.2C in Spokane. This is the highest temperature ever recorded there.
About 9,300 Avista Utilities customers in Spokane lost power on Monday and the company said a more planned outage began Tuesday afternoon in the city of about 220,000 people.
“We’re trying to limit outages to one hour per customer,” said Heather Rosentrater, Avista’s vice president of energy delivery. AP, Wednesday (30/6/2021).
