Heat Wave in China, Tile Melts and Cracks in the Yard all

SHANGHAI, KOMPAS.com – Shanghai and dozens of cities in China were hit heat wavecausing the road to crack and the roof tiles to melt.

Reuters news agency reported that on Tuesday (12/7/2022) at 3 pm for example, 86 cities issued red alerts, the highest in a three-tier warning system.

A temperature warning of over 40 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours, and construction projects and other outdoor works must be stopped.

The city of Shanghai – which is still battling a sporadic outbreak of Covid-19 – told its population of 25 million to prepare for hot weather this week.

Shanghai on Sunday (10/7/2022) issued its first red alert in five years. Since records began in 1873, Shanghai has only experienced 15 days of temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

The upside has been a surge in sales of ice cream, melon and other popular summer dishes, but at the Shanghai wildlife park eight tons of ice is used daily to keep lions, pandas and other animals from overheating.

In photos on social media, Covid health workers in hazmat clothes are seen hugging a one meter high block of ice on the side of the road.

“This year, the hot weather came a little earlier than before,” said Shanghai resident Zhu Daren, as his five-year-old son played in the fountain.

“Even though it’s only July, I feel the warm weather has reached its breaking point. So you have to turn on the air conditioner when you get home and wear sunscreen when you go out,” he continued, quoted from Reuters.

Meanwhile in Chongqing, the second hottest city, the roof of one of the museums was completely melted. Traditional Chinese roof tiles also come off because of the heat that loosens the bond underneath. The city was called red alert on Monday (11/7/2022).

Chongqing also deployed trucks with sanitation water sprayers to keep the roads cool.
