Heat wave hits tri-state area, causing record temperatures | Univision 41 New York WXTV

Beginning at noon Saturday and through the weekend, the National Weather Service is warning that a heat wave will hit the tri-state area and forecasts record temperatures for this time of year. These could be close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The heat wave, with its unexpected temperatures for May, will make the tri-state area feel like summer, as the hot weather arrives more than a month before the summer solstice.

On Saturday, temperatures are forecast to reach 90 degrees, exceeding spring temperatures by about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. This I combine with a high humidity, will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The heat wave is part of climate change

As part of the changing climate the world is experiencing, tri-state weather conditions will reach several all-time highs during May, as will humidity, and other factors.

Heat advisories are in effect for much of the Northeast Corridor, including Philadelphia, Newark, parts of the New York City subway, Hartford, Connecticut and Boston, where heat indices, which reflect how hot it feels by factoring in the air temperature and humidity, could range from 100 to 105 degrees

The authorities warn that this heat wave, being the first of the year and so unexpected, can be dangerous, since it would be taking many by surprise.

How to protect yourself from record temperatures

The National Weather Center warns against doing strenuous activities in this heat wave. If you have to do any work outside, wait for temperatures to drop. It is also important that you stay hydrated, and that you wear light clothing.

Do not forget, when going out, to take with you a hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen and a bottle of water.
