Heat Wave Deaths: Impact on Elderly and Gender Disparities Revealed by Robert Koch Institute (RKI) Report

According to the latest report of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the greatest number of heat victims were among people who were at least 75 years old.

There are more women than men among the victims of the heat, but the government’s main scientific institute for biomedicine said this could be due to the fact that there are more women among the elderly.

Depending on the intensity of heat waves, the number of victims of high air temperatures varies from year to year.

RKI data show that in 2018, 2019 and 2015, the heat claimed more than 6,000 lives every year. In 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2021, the number of heat victims was between 1000 and 1700 per year.

Most of the victims had other illnesses aggravated by the heat, which led to death.
