Thermometers will continue to rise this Monday, August 21, in one of the “peak days” of a new heat wave, the fourth recorded so far this summer. A total of 35 provinces will be on orange and yellow alert due to high temperatures.
In this heat wave, which began this Sunday and will probably last until Thursday, there will be a progressive rise in temperatures in the coming days in a good part of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, due to the strong sunshine on an air mass. warm and stable, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). High temperatures will affect the northeast quadrant of the peninsula and the basins of the large rivers.
This Sunday temperatures have risen in most of the Peninsula, except in the southeast, the Andalusian Mediterranean coast and the Cantabrian Sea, where they have fallen.
Thus, 38-40ºC have been reached in the middle Ebro, depressions in the northeast, south of the Pyrenees, extreme northeastern Catalonia, Guadalquivir valley and western Andalusia, while generally 36-38ºC have been reached in the interior of the peninsula, except in Galicia and the northwest of Castilla y León.
The AEMET has announced that Monday and Tuesday will be “the peak days” of this episode. It is likely that 40ºC will be reached or exceeded in large areas of the southwestern and northeastern quadrants of the peninsula, and 36-38ºC in the interior of the peninsula, Mallorca and southern Galicia, without ruling out that they will also extend to parts of the southeast.
As of Wednesday, there is a “high uncertainty” in the prediction, since it is likely that the atmosphere will become unstable and showers and storms will be generated in areas of the interior of the peninsula, which could produce a slight drop in temperatures.
However, the AEMET points out that they will continue to be high, and it is likely that, both on Wednesday and Thursday, 38-40ºC will still be reached in the middle Ebro and depressions in the northeast, as well as in the river valleys of the southwestern quadrant.
Temperatures would continue to fall on Friday, which would put an end to the heat wave episode, although they will continue to be high in the valleys of the southwest of the peninsula and in the depressions of the northeast. In addition, a more pronounced thermal drop is likely to occur over the weekend.
Minimum temperatures will also be very high during the episode, with tropical nights, above 20ºC, and even above 23-25ºC, in points of the southern half, central area and Ebro valley.
For Monday, Aemet has Granada, Teruel, Palma de Mallorca, Burgos, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid, Zamora, Albacete, Guadalajara, Barcelona, Tarragona, Ourense, areas of Madrid, areas of Navarra and La Rioja, Álava and Valencia. In addition, it has placed Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva, Jaén, Seville, Huesca, Zaragoza, Ávila, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Toledo, Badajoz, Cáceres, Girona and Lleida on orange alert.
