Heat warning for the north: Today it will be humid and hot | NDR.de – News – Lower Saxony

Status: 13.08.2024 00:01

It will be hot again in the north today. Temperatures of up to 34 degrees are possible in some places. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a heat warning for Lower Saxony and Hamburg.

The reason for the current high temperatures is the humid, warm air that is flowing from southern parts of Europe to the north of Germany, as Mareike Pohling, a meteorologist at the DWD, told NDR Niedersachsen. A perceived temperature of up to 32 degrees is possible in many places – in southern Lower Saxony even highs of up to 34 degrees. With the sun often shining all day long, UV exposure is also increased, according to the DWD. According to the meteorologists, anyone who spends a long time outdoors should think about suitable sun protection.

Cooling off for the homeless in Hanover

Because of the high temperatures, the Market Church community in Hanover is providing free mineral water to homeless people. “We are offering a cool shelter and water to refresh those who are most affected by the heat,” said the Protestant city superintendent Rainer Müller-Brandes on Monday. The Market Church is open on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The water bottles are available for collection, according to Müller-Brandes – “while supplies last.”

Thunderstorms are possible west of the Weser and in southern Lower Saxony

It will also be summery today in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to meteorologist Pohling, maximum temperatures of up to 26 degrees are expected there. Due to the moist air mass that is spreading across the north today, isolated thunderstorms are also possible, said Pohling. Heavy rain and hail of up to 40 liters per square meter and gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour are to be expected, especially west of the Weser and in southern Lower Saxony. Nevertheless, according to Pohling, it will remain comparatively warm overnight into Wednesday. It will only cool down to 18 to 20 degrees.

At the end of the week, humid and warm weather and thunderstorms

“The extreme heat will ease a little on Wednesday,” said Pohling. Thunderstorms are then also possible in Schleswig-Holstein and eastern Lower Saxony, and on Wednesday evening also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to the DWD, however, it will remain humid and warm in Lower Saxony with temperatures of 25 to 28 degrees on the coast and on the islands and between 29 and 33 degrees inland. In Schleswig-Holstein it will be a little cooler with highs of 24 degrees. Looking ahead to the weekend, it will be unsettled with rain and it will cool down.
