What you should know
A heat warning is in effect for all five boroughs and nearly all of northern New Jersey, as well as parts of the Hudson Valley, through Friday night. Relief is still a day away, but a strong wind threat could move forward heading into the tri-state to start the weekend. Cooler temperatures are expected after the weekend, after thunderstorms and showers arrive on Friday and Saturday.
NEW YORK — The heat wave may be in the past, but high temperatures are not done with us yet and are expected to persist through Friday. The humidity would remain for the next few days.
After Central Park hit 90 degrees for the third day in a row on Thursday, Friday promises a slight drop in degrees. It’s far from a cooldown, though, because heat indices will be well into the 90s. (Central Park hadn’t seen at least three straight days of 90 degrees or higher all year before this week.)
A heat warning remains in effect for the five boroughs and nearly all of northern New Jersey, as well as parts of the Hudson Valley, through Friday night. Additionally, potentially severe weather is also expected Friday night.
Similar to what occurred Thursday night, a significant storm threat could arrive as early as Friday afternoon. Wind damage appears to be the main threat, accompanied by the possibility of hail.
The storms on Thursday and Friday will be two of several rounds of storms between Friday and early Monday.
So when do colder temperatures return? That will start to arrive on Sunday, when it will be noticeably cooler. On Tuesday there will be less humidity and on Wednesday temperatures will drop into the 70s, much more normal for this time of year.
