Heat record in Australia: 50.7 degrees | Abroad

That reports BBC News. The local meteorological office in Australia confirmed the record at 2:26 PM local time. Luke Huntington, of the Bureau of Meteorology, reported that a buildup of warm air in the region was caused by a lack of thunderstorms. Temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius were also recorded in two other towns in the area, Mardie and Roebourne.

According to Huntington, people in the area “should be extra careful to stay indoors with air conditioning, or if they must be outside, stay in the shade and keep drinking.”

According to regional media, the average temperature in Onslow around this time of year is about 36.5 degrees, but heat waves are becoming more likely and extreme due to global warming, according to Huntington. Australia’s last heat record was set on January 2, 1960.
