Until this week, temperatures in Canada have never exceeded 45 degrees.
A resident of the village of Lytton said that it was “almost impossible” to go outside.
“We try to stay indoors as much as possible. I mean, we’re used to the heat, and it’s dry heat, but 30 degrees is a lot different from 47,” she said.
In the nearby town of Burnaby, police said they had responded to 25 “sudden death” cases, adding that many were elderly.
“Heat is believed to be a contributing factor to most deaths,” the agency said in a statement.
British Columbia paramedics answered 107 heat exhaustion calls and 32 heatstroke calls on Sunday.
