Heat, Humidity and Then Storms – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – The month begins with intense summer heat, with temperatures expected to exceed 90 degrees, leading to a sensation of closer to 100 degrees during the hottest part of the day.

It won’t be hot enough to prompt a National Weather Service heat advisory, but it will certainly be hot enough to limit outdoor activities.

Attention is focused on Saturday on potentially severe weather that could bring damaging straight-line winds and copious amounts of lightning. Hail and isolated flooding are considered secondary threats at this time, while tornadoes are not likely.

The weather and threats associated with the forecast could change as the system approaches, so stay tuned to The Authority on Weather (LAEET) for the latest details.

Severe weather timeline for this Saturday

The holiday weekend starts off on the wrong foot as a slow cold front moves north-south through the area. Showers and storms are possible throughout the day on Saturday, although severe weather conditions are not expected in the morning hours.

As temperatures peak and the front approaches, storms will intensify in the afternoon.

The Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey should see them first, starting around noon but possible as late as 5 p.m. Severe weather should impact central New Jersey, New York City and Long Island between 3 p.m. 7 p.m.

Southern New Jersey will be affected last, starting around 5 p.m.

Flash floods are possible in areas heavily affected by rapid and heavy rains. All of New York City, the Hudson Valley and Nassau County, along with most of central and northern New Jersey and Connecticut are in the probable severe weather hazard zone on Saturday.

Some showers could linger into early Sunday morning, but conditions should improve greatly as the day progresses. Expect highs in the low 80s by mid-Sunday and partly cloudy skies once the remnants of rain recede.

The weather conditions for the 4th of July are looking wonderful at this point, as The Weather Authority forecasts high temperatures around 86 degrees in the city and mostly sunny skies before the fireworks.
