Heat check for the Lokstadt in Winterthur – it only gets cooler with radical measures

A pilot study comes to the conclusion that the roofs in Winterthur should be greened.

The design of buildings and squares has an impact on how hot it gets there in summer. The city’s building department has now examined which measures will bring something using the Lokstadt model. The pilot study is part of the master plan for the urban climate and is also intended to provide information for future urban development.

The result of the computer simulation: Because the tall buildings in Lokstadt cast shadows, there are only a few places outside that can become very hot. The trees, including those in the dialogue area, have been proven to provide cooling. Where the sun shines directly, however, it can get over forty degrees. That is the case with the turntable, for example, says Nicolas Perrez, spatial development project manager in the urban planning department. The design should therefore be questioned there.
