On Monday, for example, temperatures of 47.2 degrees Celsius were measured in Salem, a place in the US state of Oregon. It was not the only record temperature. In Portland, the state’s largest city, the mercury rose to 46.1 degrees that day.
It hit 32 degrees in Portland on Tuesday and similar temperatures are expected for the region for the rest of the week. Warmer than normal for the time of year, but not as extreme as the past few days. The cooling centers in the region, which have been set up because of the heat, will nevertheless remain open for the time being.
Experts argue that the heatwaves of recent days along the west coast of Canada and the United States are not directly attributable to climate change. It is obvious that rising temperatures worldwide will lead to an increase in unusual weather patterns in the near future.
