Willi Orban has been registered as a stem cell donor since 2017 after his team RB Leipzig took part in a campaign. The 30-year-old defender recently received a call to donate stem cells.
Orban has been receiving preparatory injections since last Saturday. The donation will take place in Dresden on Wednesday. After such a procedure, it is recommended not to exercise for up to 10 days. As a result, the Hungarian may miss the top match against Union Berlin on Saturday.
“I had no doubts,” Orban told German magazine Bild. “I’m being given an opportunity to save a human life with very little effort. I hope I can help my recipient to fully heal.”
“Of course I will probably miss the match against Union Berlin now, but that is of secondary importance. Anyone who knows me knows that I will do everything I can to rejoin the team as soon as possible.”
Orban has not missed a single league game this season at Leipzig, which is 4th and has been unbeaten for 18 games across all competitions. On Saturday, Union Berlin will meet the current number 2 in the Bundesliga.
