Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to remain the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Deaths caused by CVD remain alarmingly high and are estimated to reach 23 million in 2030, although overall mortality rates have decreased in recent decades, reports the National Institute of Public Health (INSP).

The group of cardiovascular diseases includes heart diseases, cerebrovascular disease and diseases of the circulatory system.

These include all diseases of the heart and circulatory system, including hypertension, ischemic heart disease, heart failure and stroke.

Risk factors

Cardiovascular risk factors are multiple and can be divided into two categories: uninfluenceable and influenceable.
Non-influential factors include gender, age, socioeconomic position, environmental factors and family history of the disease.

Influential risk factors for cardiovascular diseases include: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, consumption of tobacco and related products, stress, sleep disorders, sedentary lifestyle, harmful alcohol consumption and unhealthy diet.

Also, the presence of high blood pressure is a risk factor for the occurrence of stroke, myocardial infarction, etc.

The situation of cardiovascular diseases

• According to data from the European Society of Cardiology in 2019, it was estimated that there are approximately 113 million people living with cardiovascular diseases. In Romania, according to the data of family doctors, 1 in 4 people, so over 4 million Romanians, were diagnosed with a cardiovascular disease.
• Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in the EU. In 2020, there were 1.7 million deaths caused by diseases of the circulatory system, a percentage equivalent to 32.7% of all deaths. In Romania, 1 out of 2 people died from a cardiovascular disease, representing a percentage of 52%, almost double the share at the EU level:
• The standardized rates of mortality from cardiovascular diseases in Romania are two and a half times higher than the European average;
• Ischemic heart disease and stroke occupy the first two places in the hierarchy of diseases that generate disability and premature death for Romanians;
• In Romania, the mortality rates due to cerebrovascular accident were three to four times higher than the EU average;
• In Romania, the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are high, as follows: low consumption of fruits and vegetables = 98%, inadequate physical activity = 92%, overweight and obesity = 59%, high cholesterol = 55%, episodic abusive consumption of alcohol = 35%, smoking = 19%, Hypertension = 16%, elevated blood glucose values = 15%.

“It has been proven that by giving up smoking, reducing the amount of salt, eating more fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, the risk of cardiovascular diseases is reduced. Health policies, as well as the identification of people with increased cardiovascular risk, are essential. Thus, premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases could be prevented. Also, the identification of people with increased cardiovascular risk allows for adequate early treatment. Therefore, knowledge of the risk factors and the relevant parameters for cardiovascular disease can contribute to the prevention of the initiation of the pathological process and the severity of the disease,” reports INSP.

In this context, in December it takes place nationally, under the slogan “Give a healthy heart to your loved ones! Know your risk and prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases!”, the campaign on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases – “Hearts in gift”.

The purpose of the campaign is to inform adults about cardiovascular risk factors and their effects on health in order to create healthy behaviors.

Campaign objectives

• Understanding the fact that at the population level the cardiovascular risk is very high. Romanians have a high risk of cardiovascular disease, high risk of death and very frequent unfavorable risk factors;
• Increasing the level of information and awareness of adults regarding cardiovascular risk factors and the need to control and reduce them;
• Increasing the level of information and awareness of patients with cardiovascular disease regarding the importance of parameters that reflect cardiovascular risk factors and the importance of following the recommendations and treatment prescribed by the doctor.
