The Warcraft universe is gearing up for some big birthdays next year. Not only do we have World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary, but also Hearthstone’s 10th anniversary. Aside from us all feeling a little older, Hearthstone’s 10th anniversary shows that the card game has managed to stay fresh for a long time.
At BlizzCon recently, we sat down with game director Tyler Bielman and executive producer Nathan Lyons-Smith to talk about how Hearthstone manages to keep coming out with new cards and expansions so often.
“The map design team is absolutely incredible,” began Bielman. “We have a relatively young team that’s kind of, I think, the third generation of design team in 10 years. And they’re in many ways native card players. They have tremendous excitement and passion for the game. They’re well connected with the community. So they’re a good barometer of what will work and what won’t work. There’s a pool of ideas floating around, but it’s never like we say, “You have to use something from this list, or you have to do it there.”
Something that both new and old Hearthstone players will have noticed in the new expansion is the addition of catch-up packs. Nathan Lyons-Smith had the following to say about their importance:
“It’s going to look at your collection from each of the last five expansions and give you between one and ten cards to help you catch up and really fill out your collection in each of those expansions, which is great, because it’s what players need to combine with the new Showdown in the Badlands content to have fun right now.”
