The Association of Mastectomized Women of Ceuta (ACMUMA) Remember that all people operated on for breast cancer who go to the entity will be able to count on a ‘heart pillow’. It is a cotton pad that is placed under the armpit and removes the arm from the operated area. “The cushion is very important, you sleep very comfortably with it,” says Hilda Castro, president of ACMUMA. It can also be used to be on the couch.
“We give it to all the people who are operated on, whether or not they remove the breast, because normally the armpit is touched to all women to see the sentinel node,” explains Castro. In addition, the association also delivers a prosthesis and a bra that fastens in the front, all made of cotton because you can’t “put fiber next to wounds”.

The pillows are prepared in-house. ACMUMA is in charge of buying the fabric “with beautiful colors” and varied and the filling, and the volunteers sew the cushions. They are members of the association, as well as members of the board of directors: “We have many things for those that are operated to relate.” Among other activities, physiotherapy, swimming, Pilates, yoga sessions or meetings with a psychologist are organized. “It is important to talk to each other and no one better than us than we are operated, we understand each other ”, affirms Hilda Castro.
When a new person arrives at the association, says Castro, the first thing he needs is to be listened to and cared for. The history, the example, of the most veteran also tends to give strength to face a difficult situation: “It is very different when they enter than when they leave. They change a lot ”.

With the pandemic, some of the activities organized by the entity have been suspended, such as Pilates and yoga, although the president hopes that they can be resumed next year. Nor can they go to the hospital to visit or accompany the associates.
Since the arrival of the covid vaccines was announced, ACMUMA requested that those suffering from cancer be taken into account. “We have done everything possible to vaccinate cancer patients undergoing treatment as soon as possible,” says Hilda Castro. Now, he adds, all of these people have received their drug.
