Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny has ended his career at the age of 34. The former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper announced this on Instagram on Tuesday.
“I have not only fulfilled my dreams, I have come further than my imagination would have dared to take me. I have played at the highest level with the best players in history without feeling inferior. Everything I have and everything I am, I owe to this beautiful sport of football. I have also given everything to football for 18 years of my life, every day, without excuses. Even if my body is still ready, my heart is no longer in it. It is time to focus on my family,” the Pole wrote on Instagram.
Szczesny left Poland in 2006 to join Arsenal’s youth academy. After a loan spell at Brentford during the 2009–10 season, he made his Gunners debut in November 2010, becoming the London club’s youngest goalkeeper to play in the Premier League.
After 181 matches played for Arsenal, he left the English capital for AS Roma in 2015 and then moved to Juventus in 2017. He took part in 252 matches with the Old Lady with whom he won three Italian league titles, three Italian Cups and two Italian Super Cups.
