Heart attack treatment, Baron Romeo di Patti among the excellences of Italy

In 2023, the cardiovascular sector in Italy recorded an improvement in the quality of hospital care. Data collected by the National Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas) indicates that 59% of hospitals have achieved levels of quality defined as “high” or “very high” in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, up from 51% in 2022 One of the main metrics analyzed concerns the treatment of severe heart attack, known as Stemi heart attack, for which it is essential to perform a coronary angioplasty within 90 minutes of the patient’s arrival at the hospital. The regulation on hospital care standards, established by Ministerial Decree no. 70 of 2015, sets the minimum compliance threshold at 60%. In 2023, 63% of patients received angioplasty on time, marking an increase from 57% the previous year.

In particular, three Italian hospitals with high volumes of activity, i.e. over 100 hospitalizations per year for Stemi heart attacks, exceeded 85% of timely interventions. Among these there is the Barone Romeo Hospital in Patti (Messina), supported by the Treviso Hospital and the G. Pasquinucci Heart Hospital in Massa, all with excellent performances. This data is relevant for the cardiovascular area, where Agenas observes a reduction in the qualitative differences between structures in the North and South.

Renato Schifani

The president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, commented on the results highlighting the importance of the recognition obtained by the Sicilian healthcare system, the result of efforts to reduce the historic gap compared to other regions. «We are extremely satisfied with the results achieved by the Sicilian healthcare system. The evidence from the Agenas report testifies to the commitment and determination with which our Region has worked to improve assistance and to reduce the historical gap with other areas of the country” declared Schifani.

He then underlined how progress is the result of targeted investments and the commitment of healthcare personnel, placing the emphasis on regional autonomy as a means of responding more effectively to territorial needs.

However, the president specified that autonomy alone does not guarantee efficiency and requires results-oriented management. He concluded by thanking healthcare personnel for their crucial contribution in achieving these standards.
