Hearing from witnesses who have consistently shirked responsibility – bereaved families “Please adopt us as witnesses”

Hearings into the government investigation into the 10.29am tragedy have been held twice this week.

Yesterday continued late into the night, but Minister Lee Sang-min and other officials have been consistent with the “I did everything I had to do” attitude.

The third hearing will be held next week, but the ruling and opposition parties have yet to agree when it will be held and who will be called as witnesses.

The bereaved families ask that they be placed on the witness stand.

“I think I’ve done everything possible.”

[오세훈/서울특별시장]

“I can’t say I coped perfectly, but I did my best.”

[김광호/서울경찰청장]

“As I said many times, this Itaewon has about twenty clubs. So, which club do you put your career in?”

Two hearings held this week.

Those responsible said they had done everything possible.

The bereaved families who were listening were outraged.

“It is a country where no one has responsibility. Minister, what do you think?”

[이상민/행정안전부 장관]

“Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration.”

“My son died walking. He just died walking…”

Finally, the grieving family went to the office of the Speaker of the National Assembly on the upper floor of the audience hall.

“All the commanders are consistent in their ignorance and say a lot of irresponsible things like ‘I didn’t know.'”

[신지현/고 김산하 씨 어머니]

“Obviously it’s not just the people below. They say the system worked, but it didn’t work, and the people above don’t know it, so what system worked?”

The government inquiry into the October 29 disaster, which originally ran to date, was extended by just 10 days with an agreement between the government and opposition parties.

However, in the 45 days of the parliamentary investigation, the government and opposition parties have already wasted almost a month on budget bills.

“If you find fault with this and that and the meeting is canceled again, you will forget the remaining 4 hours like last time…”

The investigation by the Special Investigation Command has already entered the final stages after punishing only a few job-level officials.

The bereaved family have requested to be adopted as witnesses at their third hearing next week.

[안영선/고 김동규 군 어머니]

“The question my son asks me the most is, ‘Mom, have all the bad people been arrested?’ I can not answer”.

However, the ruling and opposition parties have yet to agree when and who to call as witnesses.
