Last May, Metro Plus St-Grégoire presented a check in the amount of $ 1,000 to the Kangourou class at Le Rucher elementary school in Saint-Sylvère, for their participation in the Metro Croque Santé program.
The purpose of the Healthy Croque Program is to encourage students to develop healthy eating habits, and more particularly to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables, known to be the basis of a healthy diet. Metro will invest $ 500,000, by awarding scholarships of $ 1,000 each, to elementary and secondary schools in Quebec.
Description of the Kangaroo class project: “The principle of the Kangaroo class is to create a bond of attachment with students who have great needs in terms of their social behavior and their self-esteem. We welcome 5 students aged 8 to 12 years old. To do this, we try to recreate a family atmosphere in the classroom. So we have a snack together every morning to work on socialization. Many of our students eat few fruits and vegetables. We take this opportunity, during our snacks, to talk to them about the importance of good nutrition. In addition, we use cooking workshops to work on socialization and mathematics, which helps strengthen the bond of attachment between the students. “
Other schools in the Bécancour and Nicolet-Yamaska RCMs have also received grants of $ 1,000 from the Metro company as part of the Croque Santé program.
In fact, two projects from École La Jeunesse de Sainte-Perpétue received a grant of $ 1,000 each. The first project will be used to buy vegetables and seedlings which will make it possible to make beautiful salads and snacks to be enjoyed by the students. The second will be used to introduce young people to greenhouse seedlings. The grant will be used to defray the costs of garden soil, compost, organic fertilizer, seedlings, shovels, metal stakes and supports, a few bins and additional plants.
At Les Seigneuries High School, the project “On s’construit un abri and we present you vegetables and fruits! Has attracted attention. The scholarship will be used to set up a gazebo-style outdoor venue to receive guests and organize outdoor activities on the school grounds. This structure will allow students to implement various activities to make the school environment more lively during breaks and lunchtime. The fact of building this outdoor place will make it possible to recreate a public market atmosphere (while respecting the sanitary rules) and to offer fruit and vegetable snacks to the students via six workshops linked to different fruits and vegetables between May and June.
Finally, the “Start your day well” project from the Vincent-Lemire School in Saint-François-du-Lac also received a grant. “With the scholarship, we would like to buy healthy foods for breakfast. For example, buying whole grain products, diversifying the fruits and vegetables used, making good fresh juices, etc. “
