Healthcare expenditure sharply up in 2019, largest increase in childcare NOW

In 2019, healthcare expenditure rose by 5.2 percent, which is the largest increase since 2009. Child care expenditure rose by 11 percent the most, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported Thursday.

Over the year, € 4.8 billion was spent on childcare. This is due to an increase in the number of children and the number of childcare hours, but also due to higher rates as a result of stricter quality requirements. They prescribe, for example, that more employees should be present per amount of children.

Nursing, care and home care saw the largest increase in expenditure after childcare. This was 6.9 percent, bringing the total expenditure to 20.2 billion euros. This is partly due to the resources made available to nursing homes to improve the quality of care, but also due to an increase in the number of days of care provided.

In total, healthcare expenditure in 2019 amounted to 106.2 billion euros, which is more than 5 billion euros more than in 2018. An average of 6,120 euros was spent on care per person, which is 263 euros more than a year earlier.
