The vaccination campaign against Covid-19 is still ongoing and in many territories it is taking place together with the flu campaign. In total in Spain, more than 103 million doses and 40 million people They are already protected from the coronavirus.
At the same time, science continues to investigate possible side effects of vaccines to ensure maximum immunization safety. Thus, the Ministry of Health published on December 1 the 18th Pharmacovigilance report on vaccines against Covid-19 where the list of possible adverse reactions of each of the vaccines – currently being administered – against Covid-19 has been updated.
Two new side effects of the anti Covid vaccines
To the most common side effects of vaccines against the virus, Health adds two new ones: heavy bleeding during menstruation and hives.
The latest Pharmacovigilance document thus confirms the relationship between the profuse menstrual bleeding and vaccinations type of mRNA (Modern and, above all, Pfizer). This alteration, which only affects women, has created some controversy in recent months, but science has finally shown that it is precisely linked to vaccination.
On the other hand, the report makes it clear that there is no evidence to suggest this these menstrual disturbances affect the woman’s reproduction or fertility. Thus, it amounts to 9,000 reported cases of heavy menstrual bleeding worldwide after the administration of any of the vaccines. In Spain, until October 9, 2022, the reported cases amount to 921 after vaccination with Pfizer, while 299 cases were recorded after the administration of Modernain women aged 12 to 49 years.
As for urticaria, however, there have only been cases with the Moderna vaccine its appearance is rare (less than 1 in 100 people vaccinated). In Spain, until November 13, 2022, they were registered 292 reports of urticaria after the injection.
Adverse events after vaccination in Spain
Through November 13, 2022, a total of 83,093 adverse events after administration of any of the vaccines against Covid-19 (Pfizer or Moderna); i.e. 76 notifications for every 100,000 doses administered. 65% of them correspond to health professionals and 35% to citizens. Furthermore, the majority of reports were made by women (73%) and by people aged 18-65 (82%).
