Health will finance two drugs against metastatic breast cancer

With the authorization of these drugs, a response is given to a historical claim of these patients who saw how the CIPM rejected up to four times (three this year) the proposal to finance drugs on the basis of economic criteria.

For this reason, the patients started a spontaneous movement to raise awareness of the need for these treatments, which was summed up in a slogan that they made viral in a video: “Without treatment, we die”.

A campaign on Change.org that has more than 150,000 signatures

In addition, this movement of patients started a Change.org campaign which already has more than 150,000 signatures.

The approval of public funding for the drugs was achieved after the marketing company accepted the proposal of the Ministry of Health and received the approval of the CIPM, which is made up of four ministries (Health, Industry, Finance and Economy) and the autonomous communities, which take turns every six months and only three have a vote (on this occasion, they are Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia and Aragon).

With the approval of funding for these drugs, patients will be able to receive them without having to assume a cost that can reach 5,500 euros for a 21-day cycle.

This week, three patients with metastatic breast cancer (Victoria, Rosa and Raquel) appeared in the Senate to convey their demand to the senators, and obtained the commitment of the political groups from the Health Committee of the Upper House.

In Spain, 18 women die every day from metastatic breast cancer and 6,500 die each year. New drugs, such as Enhertu and Trodelvy, offer good prospects and years of survival, but the Spanish Health System, until now, did not finance them. So far in 2024, 34,000 new cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed, 5% have started as metastatic breast cancer and 30% will develop into metastasis.
