Out of stock of childhood vaccines against Covid-19the Ministry of Health has announced the purchase of 2.6 million doses of the vaccine Coronavac with the Butantan Institute. An amendment signed on Friday (6) will guarantee the purchase of 750ml doses. The remaining 1.85 million doses will be purchased when the folder makes a new addition to the contract.
The purchase was announced a day after Health Oversight Secretary Ethel Maciel said the stock of childhood vaccines by the ministry it was reset and that the file was trying to anticipate the acquisition of a new load of doses with Pfizer.
In a note, the folder informed that the new doses acquired with Butantan should be delivered and distributed as early as next week, to continue vaccinating children aged between 3 and 11. Meanwhile, the department is negotiating with other laboratories for the acquisition of more doses.
Concern about boosting childhood vaccination is linked to the newly detected variant of the coronavirus, which has high transmissibility and worries research and detection centers, and Carnival, an event that will generate crowds across the country. Vaccine supplies in several cities are low and capitals such as Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Belo Horizonte have suspended vaccination of children aged 6 months to 4 years due to insufficient doses.
According to Maciel, there was already an agreement with Pfizer for 3.2 million doses of the childhood vaccine to be delivered by the end of January. The folder wants to anticipate the arrival of this lot.
Regarding vaccines for adults, Maciel said that for this audience the problem is another: the government has enough doses, but vaccination coverage is low. It is estimated that there are 100 million Brazilians with delayed doses.
