The Torrecárdenas University Hospital begins this January a new edition of the School for Breast Cancer Patients that this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will hold its sessions electronically. The goal of the School of Patients It is to make possible the exchange of knowledge and experiences on the management of the disease among the patients themselves.
In this School, the patients who participate are experts in their disease and, therefore, “have a lot to share with other patients, even with health professionals since they can make the disease, their own experience and all that this entails, such as fears, fears, desires, what makes them feel better and what does not … “, he explained María Victoria Andueza, the reference of the School of Patients of the Torrecárdenas University Hospital.
The classroom also offers knowledge and skills that help better manage the disease, as well as prevent some of its complications. The theme that will take place this year will address topics such as tips and tricks about diet, personal image, the importance of physical exercise or how to approach social, family, couple and health professional relationships.
Andueza recalled that “this is a training project among equals, that once the patients are trained teach other people who are going through the same situation to take charge of their illness. It is a two-hour training session each appointment through the platform of the Andalusian School of Public Health ”.
The first session of this year is scheduled for the next day January 27 and February 3 (both in the afternoon). The second for March 24 and 31 (both in the morning). The next one for May 25 and June 2 (in the afternoon), later on September 22 and 29 (morning hours) and the last session will be on November 24 and December 1 (at afternoon schedule).
The coordinators are the deputy director of Nursing of the Torrecárdenas University Hospital, Antonia Alcaraz, María Victoria Andueza, a nurse from the Breast Gynecology Unit, another nurse from the Breast Surgery Unit, as well as the supervisors and references in Gynecology and Surgery care.
