Canadians deserve access to high-quality health care. That said, improving health services is often only possible after studying their organization, regulation, management, financing and delivery.

Today, the Honorable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced an investment of more than $4.3 million in the Health System Impact Grants Program to transform the Canadian health system . The funds invested come from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and their partners, namely the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé and Michael Smith Health Research BC.

The Health System Impact Scholarship Program aims to transform the system to ensure access to the highest quality care for all Canadians. This initiative provides doctoral students, postdocs and early career researchers with the opportunity to collaborate with health organizations across the country to lead projects aimed at generating evidence that can inform improvement of the health system, services and policies in Canada. As part of its 2024 competition, CIHR is supporting 25 doctoral students and 20 postdoctoral students affiliated with 19 universities to join 34 health organizations across the country.

These researchers will address a variety of pressing needs within the health care system, including optimizing primary care, improving services provided in long-term care facilities, supports for health care workers , promoting equity in cancer treatment, leveraging digital health opportunities, predicting antimicrobial resistance using machine learning, mitigating the effects of climate change on health, the integration of principles of cultural safety in the healthcare sector and the improvement of mental health services.
