It was successfully held at HEALTH total hip arthroplasty in a patient with familial thrombocytopenia Platelet Storage Pool Disease (PSPD), a platelet disorder that gives sufferers a moderate/severe bleeding tendency.
The operation was performed for the first time at HYGEIA by specialist hip surgeon, Mr. Konstantinos Zachos applying an advanced form of the minimally invasive technique Direct Superior and in collaboration with Anesthesiologist Mr. Spyridon Kalakona and Hematologist Ms. Euthymia Melissaris.
The patient presented with a subcephalic hip fracture which, due to the intense and undiagnosed bleeding tendency, had not been operated on. In her history, the patient had episodes of prolonged micro-bleeding during tooth extraction and heavy menorrhoea, while in previous operations (cholecystectomy, caesarean section) she experienced life-threatening bleeding. Unexplained bleeding after thorough investigation was identified as familial thrombocytopenia compatible with Platelet Storage Pool Disease and subsequently the blood donation plan was drawn up, which would provide satisfactory intraoperative and postoperative hemostasis.
The application of this plan in combination with the use of the modified Direct Superior technique, they allowed the patient to safely undergo a virtually bloodless total hip arthroplasty and four days after surgery to return home fully mobilised.
Commenting on the attending physician, Mr. Zachos emphasized that: “HYGEIA, with its well-trained human resources, as well as its high-level logistical infrastructure, proved once again that it is in a position to deal with particularly demanding cases by allowing its doctors to apply innovative techniques. Ms. Melissaris and Mr. Kalakonas added that the catalytic factor for achieving this result was the excellent cooperation between the various departments of our Hospital”.
