Health simplifies the electronic prescription to process orthoprosthetic services in the Canary Islands

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of External Relations and Inspection of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), has promoted the electronic prescription for the processing of orthoprosthetic services authorized by Primary Care through the system ORTHOREC.

This new circuit, in which the directorates of the different health areas of the archipelago have collaborated, simplifies and speeds up the procedures so that the beneficiaries of this aid receive the products prescribed by Primary Care professionals in less time, as reported. the Regional Ministry of Health this Thursday.

This action allows the computer application that manages the services in the Health Area Inspection Service to receive, electronically, prescriptions for orthoprosthetic products enabled by Primary Care professionals in the electronic medical records of patients and users.

Likewise, orthopedics registered as SCS collaborators will be able to see these authorized prescriptions and initiate the corresponding dispensing and billing procedures, always by electronic means, communicating with the corresponding health areas.

In any case, authorized centers will be able to continue managing dispensing and billing as before.

This new service facilitates communication and collaboration between the different agents involved in the authorization of orthoprosthetic services, such as prescribing doctors, orthopedics, inspection services and health administration.

It also provides “more appropriate and efficient” care to citizens by optimizing administrative processes related to the prescription, dispensing and payment of orthoprosthetic products.

To promote this action, in May of this year the trial period of this new service began in Gran Canaria, expanding first to Tenerife, and later to the rest of the non-capital islands in the month of July.

After this island and phased deployment, ORTOREC is currently being developed in Primary Care and the expectation is that it will be progressively implemented in the Hospital Care health services of the Canary Islands.

The incorporation into this project of the rest of the health establishments collaborating in the provision of orthoprosthetics, that is, pharmacies, opticians and hearing aid establishments, is also being studied, since currently the ORTOREC system is available only for orthopedics registered as collaborators of the SCS.

Currently, the catalog of types of orthoprosthetic products that can be authorized from Primary Care is made up of four blocks, which include basic manual wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and cushions to prevent pressure ulcers.
