The director of the National Immunization Program, Diana Sierra, said this Monday, August 30, that the mixture of vaccines in the country is not considered for the moment (heterologous scheme), since they still have no scientific consensus to support it.
“We do not want to fall into that, to cover a large part of the population with first doses, mix or make heterologous schemes, ”Sierra explained to The News Network.

He said that the scientific rationale is not really supporting or evidencing the fact that vaccination mixing different types of drugs will be effective.
“The recommendations at the international level of yes or yes, is to always manage peer schemas: If I start with Pfizer, I finish with Pfizer or if I start with Moderna, I finish with Moderna ”, he emphasized.
He added that when there is already scientific literature that supports being able to mix vaccines, then it will be taken into account, but at this time it would be a risk.
“We cannot risk the population if we do not have literature, if there is no scientific basis for using heterologous schemes ”, express.
Sierra said that although there are already countries that started the heterologous scheme such as Argentina, Spain, the United Kingdom and Italy, on an international scale there is no scientific foundation, although there are studies that are still in process.
He emphasized that in Guatemala the mixture of vaccines is discarded for the moment, but that in due course the scientific evidence could be analyzed.
