Health: Ndioum hospital faces shortage of blood bags

XALIMANEWS: The Ndioum hospital, in the Podor department (north) is facing “critical situations” due to a shortage of blood bags, said on Wednesday, Doctor Mamadou Ndiaye, head of the laboratory service of the said health establishment.

”The Ndioum hospital is often faced with critical and urgent situations due to a lack of blood bags. The demand here is very high, because the establishment is located in an area crossed by the national road 2, which quite often records traffic accidents, resulting in injured people who lose a lot of blood,” he said.

The doctor spoke at the end of a meeting focused on the participation of media actors in social development.
On this occasion, he invited local populations to participate in blood donation activities to build up a stock for the hospital.

Dr. Ndiaye also specified that several departments of this health establishment inaugurated in 1977, notably the maternity ward, nephrology, pediatrics and surgery, very often express their need for blood bags.

“There are fewer and fewer volunteer donors. In some cases, we ask the patients’ companions for emergencies,” he lamented.

He did, however, welcome the support of the Podor Departmental Council, which provided the Ndioum hospital with a cold chain to store blood bags, which he considered “very insufficient”.
