More than 76,000 people have signed up for health care coverage through Covered California between April 12 and May 15, according to a press release from Covered California, a free service where Californians can get health insurance at low cost.
According to the state organization, the figure is 2.5 times higher than that of people enrolled during the same period in 2019. However, “approximately 810,000 Californians in the state are uninsured and are eligible for health insurance” through that program.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Covered California launched a special enrollment period to allow people without health coverage to register and benefit from the “American Rescue” Plan, which seeks to reduce the costs of medical expenses.
Those who sign up now will be able to have health coverage starting in May.
The Covered California Special Enrollment Period will be available throughout the year. However, it is important that people sign up as soon as possible in order to take advantage of all the benefits available.
“Californians must register before May 31 so they can begin to benefit from the new law on June 1,” according to the statement.
Who can take advantage of the benefits of the American Rescue Plan?
• Californians who do not have health insurance
• Californians who are enrolled in coverage directly with a health insurance company
