Health in Brittany. The private sector, essential and complementary to public hospitals?

In an interview published on the occasion of the Congress of the Regions of France, on September 24, 2024, the president of the Brittany region, Loïg Chesnais-Girard, estimated that health issues should be addressed at territorial level. We will also have to question the role of the private hospital in the on-call system and for weekends and nights. Why would there be doctors who provide the public health service and others who only keep lucrative activities? Why is no one addressing this subject which deserves a debate? , he replied.

It is on this point that the federation of private hospitals of Brittany (FHP), chaired by Nicolas Bioulou, wanted to react. In a press release, the federation indicates that private clinics and hospitals have always provided numerous on-call and on-call lines in all Breton territories, without benefiting from the level of funding of public establishments. And to add, the role of the private hospital in care on weekends and nights no longer needs to be demonstrated, but needs to be recognized and financed.

Meet the professionals

Indicating that it is at the disposal of the regional president, with whom discussions have already taken place during the campaign for the 2021 regional elections, the federation seems to regret a speech which testifies to a lack of awareness of the complementary and essential offer that brings private hospitalization to Brittany, through its 3,100 caregivers and 1,200 doctors. Remember that, in all territories, FHP structures carry out most of the surgical activity (1.7 times that of the University Hospital in the Rennes metropolis, for example) and fulfill public service missions (emergencies, training, etc.) , like other health establishments.

Loïg Chesnais-Girard is thus invited by the federation to meet our health professionals and discuss the functioning of a private hospital. And to see the economic balance increasingly difficult to maintain.
