Eggs and coffee or a cup of tea may sound like a dream breakfast combination, but a health expert has warned that combining these foods at the same time can create problems
Eggs are a healthy and nutritious breakfast staple, being an excellent source of vitamins A, D and B12 as well as protein. But if you tend to eat them with your morning cup of coffee, we have bad news for you.

According to nutrition experts, while it might be a dream combination from a taste perspective, you’re not getting the full benefit of the nutrients from eggs. Dietitian Priya Bansal, from Apollo Hospital, Delhi, explained: “Eggs and coffee have their own individual benefits and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced breakfast. Eggs are a powerhouse of protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Coffee is known for its high caffeine content, which gives stimulating effects.”
However, when combined, Dr. Bansal cautioned that several factors come into play that can lead to potential side effects in some people. For example, when eggs and coffee or tea are consumed together, they can interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients.
According to Dr. Bansal, coffee contains compounds called tannins and polyphenols, which can prevent the absorption of iron and calcium, which are found in eggs. This is supported by the nutrition experts at Prepped Pots, who advise us not to drink coffee or tea for at least an hour after eating eggs, as reported by the Huffington Post.
But that’s not all. Combining eggs and coffee can lead to digestive discomfort, reports OnlyMyHealth. This is because both eggs and coffee can stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can lead to acid reflux, heartburn or stomach pain.
Additionally, both eggs and coffee have diuretic properties, meaning they can make you urinate more, which could dehydrate you. You should make sure you drink more water, especially if you eat and drink these two foods together.
Finally, according to Dr. Bansal, coffee has the ability to interfere with the absorption of certain medications, including antibiotics or antacids. Therefore, consumption with eggs could further disrupt absorption, hindering their effectiveness.
