Health – Dresden – Despite Corona: Environmental protest in Dresden and Leipzig – Health

Dresden / Leipzig (dpa / sn) – Protest for climate protection despite Corona – with posters, chalk pictures and online. Supporters of the climate protection movement Fridays for Future took part in the global “net strike” with small campaigns in Dresden and Leipzig on Friday.

Because no people were able to demonstrate on the street for environmental protection because of the corona pandemic, posters were hung on the windows and in public places in many places. Four banners hung on the inner city bridges in Dresden. “As courageously as in the corona crisis, steps in climate protection must now be taken by our government,” said co-organizer Mile Baum from Dresden. An online demo with a music program and speeches by climate protectors was held on the YouTube internet platform at noon.

“If we can’t go out on the street, then our signs!”, Leipzig representatives of the Fridays for Future movement wrote on Twitter. Annelie Berger, spokeswoman for Fridays for Future in Leipzig, estimates that around a hundred posters had been placed in ten central locations by the afternoon. “The protest is bigger than I had hoped for,” said the 17-year-old high school graduate.

The shapes were creative: on so-called “stones of contention” was written something like “Act now or swim later” on brightly painted stones. Some people made their demands on climate protection with chalk on the street, for example on the Sachsenbrücke.

On the afternoon of the protest day, activists formed a line in downtown Leipzig – at a distance from one another. The human chain was over 300 meters long, and a dpa reporter counted more than 150 people. On banners they called for climate protection, open borders and help for refugees. According to the police in Leipzig, there were no operations in the course of the actions, everything was peaceful.
