Health Department Warns of Illness Outbreak Linked to ‘Game Dinner’ in Westchester County

In a recent turn of events, the Westchester County Health Department has issued a warning regarding an illness outbreak linked to a “Game Dinner” that took place at the American Legion Post in Mount Kisco on January 19 and 20. It has been reported that several individuals fell ill after consuming food served at the event, prompting the health department to advise attendees to contact their doctors immediately.

According to the American Legion, the space was rented out for the event, and an external food vendor was responsible for preparing the meals. However, it seems that the vendor’s oversight may have led to dire consequences. The Westchester Health Department has identified two cases of toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by a parasite found in undercooked meat. It is believed that these individuals contracted the illness after consuming venison, commonly known as deer meat, which was served at the dinner last month.

Reports indicate that approximately 20 people have developed symptoms thus far, with test results confirming the infection in two cases. Symptoms of toxoplasmosis include fever, muscle aches, and sore throats. While it is important to note that toxoplasmosis is not contagious, the health department urges caution and emphasizes the need for medical attention.

Dr. Dial Hewlett Jr., a medical director with the county Health Department, expressed particular concern for pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems. He stated, “We are particularly concerned about people who may have taken food home and other people may have ingested it. Especially women who might be pregnant and also, individuals who are immunocompromised.” This caution stems from the potential risks associated with toxoplasmosis, such as miscarriages, birth defects, and even fatality for those with compromised immune systems.

To ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees, Dr. Hewlett advises anyone who attended the dinner, consumed venison, and is experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention. The Westchester County Health Department is readily available to address any concerns or queries individuals may have.

For further information or assistance, the Health Department can be reached at 914-813-5180 during business hours and 914-813-5000 after hours. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers recommendations on its website to help prevent toxoplasmosis.

In light of this alarming outbreak, it is crucial for all individuals who attended the “Game Dinner” in Westchester County to take the necessary precautions and seek medical attention if required. By acting swiftly and responsibly, we can mitigate the potential risks associated with this illness and ensure the well-being of our community.
