People aged 60 and older, healthcare workers and people with medical risks should be offered a repeat vaccination against the corona virus every year.
This is best done in the autumn, possibly in combination with the flu jab for which they already qualify. This is the advice of the Health Council.
In total, about 4 million people could get the corona shot, the council estimates.
The advice on the “structural vaccination program” goes to Minister of Health Ernst Kuipers. He has to tie the knot.
People from the ‘medical high-risk groups’ and the ‘medical high-risk groups’ include, for example, people with Down syndrome, people who are very seriously overweight, patients who have undergone an organ transplant or are on the waiting list, and people with kidney failure.
Pregnant women are also eligible for the repeat shot. A corona infection can lead to serious complaints for them, and the baby can be born earlier than intended. According to the council, it is best to vaccinate them at 22 weeks of pregnancy. That reduces the risk of corona complications the most. For them, the shot does not necessarily have to be given in the autumn, but can be combined with the whooping cough shot, for example.
Last autumn, people were able to go to vaccination locations of the GGDs to get the repeat shot. If that vaccination is now combined with the flu jab, this may be done through the GPs, but according to the Health Council, that is up to the minister.
It is the first advisory report from the Health Council on tackling the coronavirus since the end of the pandemic. The virus is now part of everyday life, it has become endemic, so to speak. That does not mean that the virus has disappeared, because people are still getting infected. Due to the virus, people still have to be hospitalized. In addition, people are still dying from the consequences of the infection. These are mainly people from the risk groups, for whom the Health Council now recommends a repeat injection.
