REGION – In 2023, the Health Council recommended setting up an annual vaccination program against COVID-19. At the request of the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, the council assessed whether adjustments are necessary to the program before 2024. The council recommends that, as in 2023, people over 60 and medical risk groups be offered vaccination in the autumn.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still circulating and can still cause serious illness, especially among these groups. Vaccination offers effective protection against this. The council also advises, as in 2023, to offer vaccination to healthcare workers who have direct contact with vulnerable patients, in order to indirectly protect risk groups.
According to the Health Council, the vaccination offer to pregnant women does not need to be continued in 2024 because the risk of serious illness and premature birth is very low due to the built-up immunity of the population against the current virus variants.
