The Public Health Care Authority announced the success of Dr. Magdi Yacoub’s heart team at Al-Nasr Hospital for Children with the participation of the Al-Salam Hospital team of the Authority in Port Said in saving the life of a one-and-a-half-year-old baby suffering from a transposition of the major arteries (pulmonary and aorta) in the heart, which is medically known as a defect. She added that the team of pediatric cardiologists at Al-Nasr Specialized Hospital for Children, headed by Dr. Abdurrahman Afifi, head of the pediatrics and interventional catheterization department at the hospital and the Magdi Yacoub Heart Center in Aswan, who indicated that the child was transferred to the Nasr Hospital for rapid intervention and treatment, and upon entering the hospital the necessary medical examinations were performed for him and a CT scan of the brain was made to ensure that there was no bleeding And it was found that he suffers from a relocation of the pulmonary artery and the aorta in the heart, where the pulmonary artery is connected to the left ventricle and the aorta is connected to the right ventricle.
And Dr. Abdel Rahman Afifi continued, that the alteration of the position of the main arteries in the heart of the child caused the flow of blood that is not saturated with oxygen through the right side of the heart and returns to the body again without passing through the lungs, while the oxygen-rich blood flows through the left side of the heart and then returns directly to the lungs. Without passing through the rest of the body, the flow of unsaturated blood through the body causes the skin to be blue (cyanosis).
He continued, the appropriate drug was given to the child to open the arterial connection between the pulmonary and aorta arteries to raise the proportion of oxygen in the blood, and also a catheter operation was performed for the child to make an opening between the right and left atria in the heart to help mix blood and raise the proportion of oxygen, and the child’s health condition was successfully stabilized and the proportion increased He has oxygen to 90%.
Afifi also mentioned that after 21 days have passed since the child’s first operation, another operation will be performed (total repair of the reversed arteries, “Arterial Switch”) to complete the child’s treatment.
