Health care in Burgas: most doctors are over 55 years old, young people are less than 20%

Gender Distribution of Doctors in Burgas Region Revealed

A recent study conducted in the Burgas region has shed light on the distribution of practicing doctors by gender. The findings show that out of the total number of doctors, 47.4% are men, while women make up 52.6% of the medical workforce.

The study also examined the age distribution of doctors in the region. It was found that the largest number of doctors, accounting for 32.2%, fall within the 55-64 age group. Following closely behind are doctors aged 45 to 54, making up 20.1% of the total.

Interestingly, the study revealed that there are 285 young doctors under the age of 35, constituting 18.9% of the practicing doctors in the region. When analyzing the distribution of doctors by age groups and types of facilities, it was observed that the majority of young doctors on a basic contract are working in hospital facilities, accounting for 30.5%. On the other hand, only 2.8% of young doctors are employed in outpatient care facilities.

The study also delved into the specialties of doctors in the region. General practitioners emerged as the largest group, comprising 12.4% of all practicing doctors. Pediatrics ranked second with 6.8%, followed by anesthesiology and intensive care (6.3%), obstetrics and gynecology (5.8%), nervous diseases (5.7%), surgery (5.5%), and cardiology (4.8%).

In terms of insurance coverage, the study found that there are 4.9 general practitioners per 10,000 people in the district. Additionally, at the end of 2022, the insurance coverage with doctors was 39.8 per 10,000 people, while the coverage with doctors of dental medicine stood at 8.1 per 10,000 people.

The study also provided insights into the healthcare infrastructure in the Burgas region. As of the end of 2022, there were 19 hospitals operating in the region, with a total of 3,226 beds. Although the number of facilities remained unchanged compared to the previous year, there was a slight increase of 14 beds, representing a 0.4% growth.

Outpatient facilities in the region numbered 97, with a total of 117 beds. Additionally, there were 9 other medical and health facilities with 164 beds. The study revealed that there are 10 multi-specialty hospitals in the region, accounting for 58.8% of all hospitals. These hospitals also house 60.0% of the total beds in the district, with bed numbers ranging from 45 to 537. Furthermore, the region boasts 7 specialized hospitals with 1,174 beds.

The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the healthcare landscape in the Burgas region. The distribution of doctors by gender, age, and specialty, as well as the availability of healthcare facilities, will aid in the development of targeted strategies to meet the healthcare needs of the population.

When it comes to distribution by municipality, the study found that the largest number of doctors can be found in the municipality of Burgas, accounting for 49.3% of the total. The municipalities of Pomorie and Sozopol have the lowest number of doctors, making up just 1.5% and 0.6%, respectively.

Overall, the study highlights the gender distribution and age demographics of doctors in the Burgas region. It provides valuable insight into the healthcare workforce and may inform future efforts to address any imbalances or disparities in the field.
