Health Canada recalls masks containing graphene

Health Canada has announced a recall of face coverings containing graphene, a nanomaterial, because users can inhale particles that may pose a health risk.

The agency recommends against using these face covers that contain graphene or graphene biomass. According to preliminary studies, inhalation of graphene particles could cause early pulmonary toxicity in animals.

However, it is not known whether these particles can be harmful to humans.

“Variables, such as the amount and duration of exposure, as well as the type and characteristics of the graphene material used, all influence the potential for inhalation of particles and the resulting health risks,” writes the agency in a press release.

Health Canada says it has sent a request for information from mask manufacturers to assess the health risks associated with face covers containing graphene.

It orders all known distributors, importers and manufacturers to cease sales and to recall the affected products. She has advised the provinces and territories to stop the distribution and use of masks containing graphene.

Health Canada also recommends that people who have worn such a face cover seek medical attention if they have any health problems, such as new or unexplained shortness of breath, discomfort or difficulty breathing.

The agency says these face coverings may have been used in schools and daycares by adults and children. She believes they may have been used in health care facilities.
