The decline in vaccination rates is generating concern among health authorities, as a significant rebound in infections is observed. These infections grow in all communities, but, above all, in Castilla-La Mancha, Asturias and the Valencian Community. Experts suggest that lack of immunization could be contributing to the spread of these diseases.
The flu is circulating more intensely and there has begun to be a peak that some experts relate to the decline in vaccination. “Much less have been vaccinated against Covid-19 and the flu,” emphasizes Lorenzo Armenteros from the Spanish Society of Family Doctors.
A very low percentage
The alarms have gone off that this year’s campaign is not going at the desired pace, between “10% and 15% lower than what we achieved last year,” says Amós García, President of the Spanish Association of Vaccinology. This occurs to a greater extent in the age range of those over 60 years old, “no, I have not been vaccinated against the flu,” indicates a woman on the street.
This fact has an explanation and it is that experts speak of a post-pandemic effect, since so many vaccines have been able to generate “a fatigue” among society. No appointments, no vaccine
The decline in vaccination, attributed to various factors such as misinformation, fear or lack of access, could be leaving entire communities more susceptible to diseases that could be prevented with vaccines. This includes both traditional diseases and new variants that have emerged. However, if you have not done so yet because there were no dates, there is no excuse because some communities will open vaccination without an appointment.
Health authorities urgently call on the population to get vaccinated and resume regular immunization programs. Mass vaccination not only protects individuals, but also contributes to collective protection, reducing the spread and protecting against possible effects.
