The strengths of the regions
If Montreal, the metropolis still attracts the largest number of immigrants, the regions of Quebec offer many advantages for newcomers. They offer a good quality of life in smaller towns equipped with all services and enjoying proximity to nature. The more adventurous will even be tempted by more distant territories such as Gaspésie, Abitibi-Témiscamingue or Nord-du-Québec.
Come meet us during the Quebec France and Belgium Days, from November 28 to December 4, 2021

Marianne
Social worker at the Côte-Nord Integrated Health and Social Services Center in Sept-Îles
“Here I have found my place.”
Originally from the south of France where she lived until 2013, Marianne arrived in Canada on a temporary visa linked to a two-year employment contract that she finally decided to extend to settle permanently. .
How did this desire to work in Quebec come about?
During my studies, I was very interested in this province of Canada which was 10 years ahead of France in the field of social work. So, within the framework of the Journées Québec, I applied for a job offer that gave me the opportunity to live a rewarding experience. I was offered a two-year contract on the North Shore and I decided to give it a go.
How was your arrival in this region of northern Quebec?
Thanks to a welcoming activity for newcomers, I was able to quickly build a group of friends. I admit that as a southerner, the first snows were a milestone to overcome, but I quickly acclimated to enjoy winter sports. Here the climate is cold, but dry, so the winter temperatures are more pleasant.
What about your work?
First of all, I had to familiarize myself with everyday language and new expressions typically Quebecois. In my professional activity, I also had time to adapt. I work in youth protection and in Quebec we have more power in our actions than in France, which makes my job more stimulating and interesting.
Charlene and Manon
Clinical nurses at the Hôtel-Dieu-de-Sorel Hospital Center
“Our quality of life has greatly improved.”
Coming from the city of Nevers in Burgundy where they both worked in a hospital center, this couple of nurses chose to settle in February 2020 in Sorel in the Montérégie region, a medium-sized city where, according to them , I love to live.
How was your immigration journey?
We first consulted the recruitementsantequebec.ca site then we looked at a map of the province. The Montérégie-Est region seduced us with its distance from Montreal (1 hour trip) and the proximity of the St. Lawrence River and the large neighboring parks.
Tell us about your integration into the workplace.
After the 75 paid days of compulsory internship, we both integrated a position of clinician which corresponded to the level of studies which we had reached in France. This classification and the consideration of our experience put us directly at a very rewarding level in terms of salary. A period of adaptation is necessary, but we found our marks very quickly.
How is life in Sorel?
It is a town the size of Nevers where we lived in France and the perfect balance between urbanity and countryside. We often enjoy nature thanks to the many surrounding parks. In the summer, for example, we go kayaking in the archipelago of Lake Saint-Pierre and organize boat trips with our new friends. We were also able to quickly buy a house. Overall our quality of life has greatly improved.
Benjamin
Specialized nurse and team leader of the nephrology service at Hull hospital (city of Gatineau).
“What struck me the most were the multiple possibilities to grow”
A native of the Côte d’Azur where he worked until his departure for Quebec, Benjamin arrived in Gatineau at the end of 2016. His background was a specialty in nephrology-hemodialysis and only one suitcase. His goal, to start a new life. Five years later, he is on his way to his Canadian citizenship.
Why did you choose the Outaouais?
I could indeed have worked in my specialty in Montreal, but I preferred the city of Gatineau for its affordability in terms of housing and especially greater proximity to true nature. The fact that the city borders on the English-speaking province of Ontario and the capital Ottawa also influenced me, as I wanted to have the opportunity to speak English.
What do you think are the positive aspects of the nursing profession in Quebec?
What I appreciate above all is the recognition of expertise and the easy contact with his superiors, which solves a lot of problems. We also find here a permanent culture of research and a desire to advance professional practice.
All this allows you to flourish in your work while progressing thanks to the many qualifying training courses which are also compulsory.
How do you see the health professions in Canada?
What struck me the most were the many opportunities and possibilities to grow. The professions affecting health are very varied. It is possible to change the task and even the city. I found the people from the regions very welcoming to newcomers. There is a real need to fill the many vacancies, so you are always welcome.
